Learning a language doesn't have to happen in a classroom. Mill's Conversationist creates a welcoming space for conversation in Bydgoszcz.
Learning a language is one thing. Finding opportunities to use it in real conversations is often much harder. That's the idea behind Mill's Conversationist, a free social event at Młyny Rothera that encourages people from different backgrounds to meet, chat and share experiences in an informal setting.
Taking place on 23 July, the evening welcomes anyone interested in practising languages, meeting new people or simply enjoying conversations in an international atmosphere. Whether you're a local resident, a student, a newcomer to the city or a visitor passing through, the event offers a friendly space where speaking a foreign language is encouraged rather than judged.
Conversations Without the Classroom
Unlike a traditional language course, Mill's Conversationist focuses on natural conversation rather than grammar exercises.
Participants can move between language tables, joining discussions in English, Polish, Ukrainian and potentially other languages depending on who attends. Previous editions have shown that the event naturally adapts to its participants, with additional languages sometimes appearing as new communities join the conversation.
Philologist moderators will be on hand throughout the evening to help keep discussions flowing, introduce participants and offer conversation prompts whenever needed. The aim is to remove the pressure that often comes with speaking a foreign language and replace it with genuine social interaction.
More Than Language Practice
The event reflects Młyny Rothera's wider mission of creating opportunities for people to connect through culture, education and shared experiences.
Conversations often extend beyond language learning to topics such as everyday life in Bydgoszcz, local culture, travel, personal experiences and different perspectives on life in the city. It's an opportunity to meet people from a variety of backgrounds while discovering how multilingual communities are becoming an increasingly visible part of Bydgoszcz's cultural landscape.
For newcomers, the evening can also provide an easy introduction to the city, while long-time residents have the chance to meet neighbours they might never otherwise encounter.
An Inclusive Space for Everyone
Accessibility is a key part of the event's design.
The discussions are held primarily in Polish, with interpretation available in Ukrainian, English and Spanish. A portable induction loop is available in the café, while visitors can also make use of a nearby quiet room. Noise-cancelling headphones and a sensory backpack can be borrowed from the information desk, helping ensure the event is welcoming to as many people as possible.
The venue is fully accessible by lift, making it easy for visitors with mobility needs to attend.
